Did you know that some of the world’s most successful people engage in a type of creative activity routinely? Many Fortune 500 companies actually provide a space for their employees to immerse themselves in an art form, as it provides new ideas and insight. Some companies have LEGO walls and poetry chalkboards, and others go so far as offering paid “playtime”. Point is, research shows that we foster creativity when we allow our minds to wander.
You may be thinking, “How is drawing in a coloring book supposed to help?” Well, if you think about it this way, we have 60,000 thoughts per day, and 95% of them are exactly the same, day in and day out! So, if we want something to change in our lives, we must implement something new, something different.
Creating art, whether it be drawing in a coloring book or building a magnificent sculpture, provides a distraction, giving your brain a break from it’s usual thoughts. Immersing ourselves in a type of art form, can lower our stress and leave us feeling mentally clear and calm. We can also reap it’s meditative benefits, as when we enter “a state of flow”, we’re able to focus our mind, allowing worries to subside.
The amazing part about this creative technique is that ANYONE can do it. I’m going to share with you 5 simple ways of getting into the “creative flow” that require little to no skill at all. They are easy, accessible, relaxing and most importantly, fun!
COLOR IN A DESIGN
Adult coloring books are so popular these days, and for good reason. There is more and more research coming out proving the mental health benefits of just coloring in-between lines. Whether your coloring to de-stress or to gain some creative insight, both will do the trick. I actually got this coloring book from the 99 Cent Store and it’s great!
PAINT AN OBJECT IN YOUR HOUSE
This is another easy way to access your creative juices! Whether it be a mug, a bowl, a vase, a piece of wood, furniture, or any object you don’t use and want to spice up, make some good use of it and paint it! Who knows, it might turn into your new hobby.
TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THINGS YOU THINK ARE BEAUTIFUL
Now a days, our phones take much better pictures than our actual cameras! Grab either one and take a walk around the block paying attention to the things that capture your eye. Go for a drive and stop at scenic places along the way. Visit that garden or hiking spot you’ve seen in pictures or heard about through friends. Taking this time for yourself is important to rejuvenate and gain creativity.
PAINT WITH YOUR EYES CLOSED
I love this because it’s a reminder that what we create is not important, neither is the skill or knowledge. What is important, is the process. The focus, the movements, the feel, the freedom of our hands brushing against the surface. This action causes “the flow” or in other words, a meditative state. This state of mind provides relaxation, creativity, joy and insight.
MAKE A COLLAGE OF THINGS THAT CATCH YOUR EYE
- This is another easy and fun way to reap creative benefits. Grab a magazine or a newspaper and cut out pictures that catch your eye. Don’t worry about assembling your collage in an artistic way. Focus on finding your pictures, cutting the shapes, gluing the materials and seeing it come together. Again, the creative benefits are in the process, not in the end result.
